About Us
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, established in 1984 as the fourth academic college at National Tsing Hua University, focuses on academic excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration across humanities and social sciences research domains.
Our mission is to foster future leaders in the field of humanities and social sciences, emphasizing a balance between theory and practice, humanism and technology, and social responsibility. We encourage global thinking, teamwork, and a passionate, responsible, and dependable approach to life.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences currently possesses fourteen academic departments: the Department of Chinese Literature (includes M.A., Ph.D.), the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature (includes M.A.), the Interdisciplinary Program of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Institute of History (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Linguistics (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Sociology (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Anthropology (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Philosophy (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Taiwan Literature (M.A. and Ph.D.), the Institute of Sinophone Studies (M.A.), the Master's Degree Program of Taiwan Studies for in-service Teachers, the International Master’s Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, the Master's Program in Chinese Language and Culture, and the International Ph. D. Program in East Asia and the Making of the Modern World.
In an effort to promote interdisciplinary research and collaborative studies, the College hosts six research centers: the Center for Asia-Pacific/Culture Studies, the Center on Gender and Society Studies, the Center for Philosophy in Practice, the Center for World Austronesia and Indigenous Peoples, the Research Center for Literary Thoughts and Discourses, and the Research Center for Underwater Archaeology and Heritage.
Educational Goals
In accordance with “National Tsing-Hua University: Vision and Mission”, our educational goals are:
1. Evaluate students' cognitive, affective, and conative faculties to explore their correlations with cultural traditions and societal issues. We encourage proposing solutions for coexistence and progress.
2. Utilize humanities and social sciences knowledge to nurture interdisciplinary talents, contributing to innovative life and cultural experiences, demonstrating a keen awareness of social trends, and guiding organizational development.
3. Cultivate talents with insights into humanities and social sciences to influence and advocate sustainable development goals in technology and industry.
Core Abilities
To achieve our educational goals, we aim for students to possess the following core abilities:
1. Enhance proficiency in textual analysis and field investigations, while fostering the ability to engage in dialogue with tradition, self, and diverse cultures.
2. Develop interdisciplinary perspectives and capabilities for effective action beyond academic disciplinary boundaries.
3. Actively engage in public issues, demonstrating observational, reflective, and implementation skills in global and public contexts.
