Anthropology of Belief in Retrospect and Prospect

Abstract:
Anthropologists and other social sciences have long struggled with the concept of belief. It is something that we can only observe indirectly and unreliably, but which is inescapably central to our descriptions and analyses. This paper will review the different approaches that have been formulated by anthropologists in the past, and will argue that a new approach is emerging, based on a new ethnographic sensibility to cultures of belief — that is locally specific and often self-conscious practices.
