New Doctoral Program | Academia Sinica, National Tsing Hua University, and National Chengchi University Launch International Ph.D. Program in East Asia and the Making of the Modern World — Applications Open November 1, 2025

The International Ph.D. Program in East Asia and the Making of the Modern World is the first humanities-based international doctoral program established by Academia Sinica. Jointly organized by Academia Sinica, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and National Chengchi University (NCCU), this program forms part of Academia Sinica’s Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP). By integrating the academic resources and faculty expertise of the three institutions, it represents a new model of inter-institutional collaboration and doctoral training in the humanities in Taiwan.

Focusing on the theme “The Making of the Modern World: East Asian Perspectives,” the program combines Taiwan Studies, China Studies, and comparative East Asian studies, while engaging with global dialogues and cross-cultural perspectives. Its curriculum spans three core disciplines of history, literature, and philosophy, and extends to key topics such as religion, gender, and science and society. Through interdisciplinary courses and diverse methodological training, the program aims to cultivate students with an international perspective, critical thinking, and strong research competence in the humanities.

To help students devote themselves fully to research, the program offers a comprehensive scholarship scheme. All admitted Ph.D. students are eligible to receive financial support from the beginning of their studies. Upon successful completion of qualifying requirements, the scholarship may be extended up to the fifth year of study. This support ensures that students can pursue their research in a stable academic environment, reflecting the program’s strong commitment to nurturing future scholars in the humanities.

The curriculum emphasizes student-centered and research-oriented learning. To enhance individual research skills, the program includes an “Independent Study” course. Each semester, students must engage in at least 18 hours of one-on-one academic discussions with their supervisors. This structure provides tailored guidance and personalized feedback, encouraging students to broaden their research perspectives by undertaking Independent Study with multiple faculty members across disciplines, thereby strengthening their academic foundation and preparing them effectively for qualifying examinations.

The program will open for applications on November 1, 2025, with enrollment beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. Admissions are administered by Academia Sinica, and all application requirements, deadlines, and admission quotas will follow the official announcements on the TIGP website. While the program primarily recruits international students, applications from local students are also welcome. Applicants should possess adequate proficiency in academic Chinese for reading and oral communication, and meet additional language requirements according to their research fields. Detailed information regarding eligibility, required documents, and evaluation criteria can be found on the program’s and TIGP’s official webpages.

We warmly invite students from around the world who are passionate about humanities research and eager to engage in interdisciplinary and transnational inquiry to join us. Together, we will explore the intellectual and historical transformations that shaped East Asia and the modern world, opening new horizons for cross-disciplinary research in the humanities.
